Dealing with commodity risk is not easy – but those that do it well thrive.  Since 1998, we have been creating leading edge solutions for clients to help them more effectively measure and manage risk. 

We work with clients to evaluate their approach to risk, manage their hedging programs and design new ways to price their products.  We have extensive experience in risk modeling and creating analytical tools related to commodity markets and risk. 

We deliver practical and innovative solutions to clients by utilizing our strong technical backgrounds, real world experience, creative nature and ability to leverage technology. Our clients include corporations, governments and commodity organizations.

Key Personnel


Ron R. Gibson, B. Comm., M. Sc.
President

Ron is President and Founder of Gibson Capital Inc. (GCI).  Ron is driven by a passion for markets and a desire to help clients turn risk to their advantage.  He has been blessed with the opportunity to travel to more than 50 countries and to observe firsthand the workings of financial and commodity markets around the world.  Ron has worked with a wide variety of clients helping them deal with markets and risk more effectively. 

Prior to forming GCI, Ron held senior positions with Chicago-based R.J. O’Brien, one of the largest independent futures brokers in the world.  Prior to that, he co-founded the Canadian operation for Memphis-based Informa Economics, as well as working for Deloitte Canada and the Canadian Wheat Board. 

Ron is also a director of Connect First Credit Union Ltd., a member-owned financial institution with more than 100,000 members and assets of approximately $4.3 billion.  He has served on the board of Connect First and its predecessor First Calgary Financial for the past 10 years (7 of which as Board Chair), where he has gained significant experience in corporate governance.  Ron also serves on the advisory board of Simpson Seeds Inc.  He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan, a Masters of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Manitoba and a Certificate in Spanish Language & Culture from the University of Calgary.

Iebeling Kaastra, B. Comm., M. Sc., CFA, FRM 
Research Director

Iebeling is Research Director at GCI.  Iebeling has an insatiable appetite and natural born aptitude for markets of all kinds.  With a strong educational background and 25 years of industry and trading experience, he brings a great deal to the table when it comes to commodity markets and risk.  Iebeling’s industry experience prior to joining GCI includes R.J. O’Brien, James Richardson International and the Canadian Wheat Board. 

Iebeling holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree and a Masters of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Manitoba.  He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM).

Iebeling enjoys flying his own sailplane, as well as instructing for the past 10 years at the Cu Nim Gliding Club in Black Diamond, Alberta.  His other hobbies include hiking, kayaking, and traveling with his wife and daughter.

David R. Sauder, B. Sc., M. Sc. 
Technical Director

David is the Technical Director at GCI.  He is the creative force and inspiration behind many of the modeling solutions and market analytics that GCI has developed over the years.  David’s sharp analytical skills, extensive statistical/modeling background and considerable programming skills are tailor made for designing and building risk-related products.  And there are few people east of Redmond, Washington that know Excel and its capabilities better than David.

David’s technical skill is complemented by considerable industry knowledge, acquired during a 10 year career outside of the information technology industry.  His industry work experience includes CN Rail, the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation and the Canadian Wheat Board.  He holds a Bachelor of Agriculture Degree and a Masters of Science degree in agricultural economics, both from the University of Saskatchewan.
