Alberta Cattle Price Insurance Program Update - February 12, 2010

Alberta's Cattle Price Insurance Program or "CPIP" was launched for fed cattle in September 2009.  So far, registration and uptake on the program have been promising and have exceeded expectations.  This innovative risk management program is a first for Canada and fills a significant risk management void for Alberta’s beef cattle producers.

The provincial CPIP Steering Group (which includes Gibson Capital) is now focused on developing price insurance products for yearlings and calves.  It is expected that a yearling price insurance product will be launched in the fall of 2010.

Feed Pea Benchmark for Western Canada - January 23, 2009

A new price discovery tool for feed peas was recently launched by Pulse Canada. The feed pea benchmark provides an indication of the feeding value of dry peas in Western Canada based on their value in swine rations.  Benchmark prices are published for Central Alberta, Central Saskatchewan and Southern Manitoba on  a weekly basis.  The weekly feed pea benchmark prices can be viewed at:

www.pulsecanada.com/benchmark

The feed pea benchmark is intended to be used a pricing reference and to enhance the price discovery process for feed peas.  Gibson Capital provided the background research and developed the methodology for calculating the benchmark prices.
